Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts,
Located in West Palm Beach, Florida, is one of the premier
performing arts centers in the Southeast with a growing national and
international reputation. True to the spirit in which it was created,
the Center is expanding programming by initiating projects on local,
national and international levels. The world-class Kravis Center
opened fully funded, with a total construction cost of $68 million,
of which a remarkable $49 million came from private individuals and
corporations. The Kravis Center is a success story that provides
communities worldwide with an example of a thriving performing
arts center and a major community and economic catalyst. Set on
10.6 acres of property at the highest point in the city, the Kravis
Center includes three venues -- the 2,193-seat Alexander W.
Dreyfoos, Jr. Concert Hall, the flexible 300-seat Rinker Playhouse
and the outdoor Michael and Andrew Gosman Amphitheatre with a
capacity for 1,400 patrons. Additionally, the Kravis Center
facilities include the Cohen Pavilion, which houses the Weiner
Banquet Center meeting and banquet facility and The Picower
Foundation Arts Education Center, along with a five-level parking
garage.
Fall 2008 marks the Center's 17th Anniversary season and the
number of events hosted annually has grown to more than 800, with
attendance of more than 500,000 patrons. Many regionally based
arts organizations call the Kravis Center their home including Ballet
Florida, Miami City Ballet, Palm Beach Opera, and the Palm Beach
Pops. During the 2008-2009 season, the Kravis Center itself will
present more than 350 performances featuring acclaimed artists
from every discipline. Established as a leading force in the social
fabric of the community, its many outreach programs are as broad
and varied as the community itself. To date, the Center has opened
the door to the performing arts for more than 1.1 million school
children as well as thousands of economically disadvantaged senior
citizens, minorities and community groups.

Founded In 1894, West Palm Is Oldest City
In Palm Beach County
On Nov. 5, 1894, 87 of the town's 500 or so
residents, gathered "atop the calaboose" (the
jailhouse) at Poinsettia (now Dixie) and
Banyan streets and voted 77-1 to incorporate
"West Palm Beach." The area had originally
been called Westpalmbeach, a single word,
then split into three words.
The historic buildings, structures, and sites
within the boundaries of the City are listed
by "neighborhoods." The concept of historic
neighborhoods was developed as a means of
organizing areas within the community that
have unique characteristics which set them
apart from other areas. The boundaries of
historic neighborhoods were established based
on geography, topography, historic use, and
types of buildings within the area.

The opening of the Palm Beach Maritime
Museum in 1999, after 6 years of
preliminary work, is a major event for
South Florida. Following a lengthy
restoration and construction program, we
now have four facilities: 1. The former
U.S.Coast Guard Station, Boathouse and
President John F. Kennedy command
post and bomb shelter on Peanut Island;
2. The marine science field office and
educational center, preview building and
educational center, preview building and
ferry dock at Currie Park in West Palm
Beach [below, left] (Museum tours leave
from this site for Peanut Island and the
Kennedy Bunker at the Coast Guard

Education is our passion ... Our first
exhibit was a fascinating collection of
artifacts from the Battleship Maine, which
sank after a mysterious explosion in
Havana Harbor ... The rest is history. It's
an eerie feeling to see the bugle that blew
taps for the Army contingent on board on
the eve of the ship's destruction and see
salvaged uniforms in perfect condition
that were never again to be worn by the
victims. One of the permanent exhibits on
Peanut Island is John F. Kennedy's
Bunker ... Constructed by the SeaBees
under the direction of the Secret Service.
Peanut Island is very near the Kennedy
Compound in Palm Beach and the bunker
was a nuclear war contingency facility
during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It is a
stark reminder of the Cold War at its peak,
and our military past is certainly relevant
today!
Our living reef system is only one of
nature's treasures to be studied here.
Here in the Palm Beach area, we have an
intensive mix of residential development,
historical cultural resources, commercial
ship traffic, agriculture and recreational
use of our waterways. We have
crystal-clear saltwater at our docks and
part of our mission is to help keep it that
way. We plan to collect data for use by
graduate and high school programs ...
and for use by environmental engineers,
both commercial and jurisdictional.
Currently under construction is an
innovative "Virtual Port" which will include
automated data collection from in situ
sensors [e.g. salinity, turbidity, pH, tides,
current] as well as real-time television
both above and underwater.We'll keep you
posted as we progress.
