nation’s only award, which recognizes the dual role chambers have in creating both
leading businesses and communities.

Florida Chamber of Commerce
The history of the Florida Chamber reflects impressive and significant accomplishments.
With near-beginnings as the Florida State Chamber of Commerce at an organizational
meeting in Kissimmee on August 15, 1912, the first continual group was formed on April
29, 1916, as the Florida Cattle Tick Eradication Committee (of the Southern Settlement
and Development Organization). The stated purpose was “to undertake an active state-
wide campaign of information and education in cattle tick eradication and to bring to its
aid and assistance, as far as possible, every organization and individual in the State of
Florida who is interested in a bigger and better Florida.” By 1919, all Florida counties were
involved in eradication programs, and the state legislature had enacted compulsory vat
dipping of all cattle in Florida. The cattle tick was completely wiped out in only 15 years.

Tampa Bay, an area that encompasses three counties and is "home" to over 2 million
residents. It's a home filled with sunny beaches and bright futures. It offers great business
opportunities and low costs for doing business. It's where Tampa Bay Buccaneers' fans
cheered their winning team on to Super Bowl glory in 2002 and their favorite hockey
team, the Tampa Bay Lightning, on to the 2004 Stanley Cup victory. It's also home to the
"Number 1 Zoo in the United States for Kids."

In April of 1947, a handful of business people interested in the future of Sulphur Springs
(which pretty much was North Tampa in those days), organized the Sulphur Springs
Chamber of Commerce. The meeting was called to discuss a fire control district in
Sulphur Springs. As Senator Sheldon was unable to attend the meeting, the group
decided to use the opportunity to officially form a Chamber of Commerce. They had
informally discussed this on several occasions. Mr. J. L. Young was appointed temporary
chairman and the first official meeting was held on April 4, 1947, at the American Legion
Hall on Bird Street.
